    Wednesday, September 10, 2025, 8:30 am - 1:00 pm - One-day Workshop

    Bring your studio practice outside!

Plein air painting (or the act of painting outside in the natural world) has become very popular - enticing studio and amateur artist to gain direct access to light, color and value only available outdoors. Whether a novice, intermediate or experienced studio painter looking to get outdoors, this workshop is a unique opportunity to join an experienced plein air artist, judge and teacher to learn the fundamentals he has cobbled together working alongside some of the best known plein air artists today. This special "paint alongside" half-day event will include how to capture perspective, value, palette in the urban or natural landscape and use of design principles like the rule of 3rds and golden ratio. We'll start with a "quick" field sketching exercise and move through a repeatable method to start and complete paintings outdoors. During the session we'll talk about some of the "hacks" or methods we use to deal with weather, safety and other aspects of outdoor painting. Best fit: beginning to intermediate artists currently working in Oil, Acrylic or Gouache.

    ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

I've always been a dreamer, a romantic, and an artist. I've been told more than once that I have my 'head in the clouds.' I admit that is true. I see the world differently. Maybe that is why I like watercolor so much. It is fluid and free and has a hard time playing by the rules.

I received a traditional art education at both Michigan State University and Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, but I just couldn't seem to follow the rules either. I kept asking, "What if I did this?" Or, "What if I changed that?" Early on I developed a loose style of watercolor painting and over time it has evolved to a very loose style. I start a story with my paintings but then, I want the person looking at them to find their own story and finish what I started. That is how I connect with the collector, by creating a story telling relationship. I want to do more than paint a pretty picture. I want to create art that connects us through thoughts, memories, feelings, and beauty.

Learn to draw using contour lines, value, and shading!

In this Beginners Drawing Class students will learn various techniques of drawing, from linear work to shading!

We will start with CONTOUR DRAWING. Contour drawing is seeing the contour of objects, subjects, faces, hands, etc. and drawing lines to identify these contours. Modified contour with variation of line and weighted line.

Then we will proceed with VALUE. Values in drawing means the shading of shadows, drop shadows, while preserving the highlights, etc. These range from the darkest values to the white of page with grays in between giving a drawn subject the illusion of being 3-dimensional. Students will learn to SHADE and create value gradients using three finely sharpened wooden carbon pencils while learning about the varying hardness and softness of these carbons. Then we will use a few erasers for highlighting. Blending values using a stump as well as using differing pressures.

DRAWING Then you will also learn how to draw and shade a cone, cube and sphere for practice that leads into doing your final drawing of choice using contour drawing and shading with the skills you have learned. You will finish this class with the confidence to draw any subject and to shade it to create a 3-dimensional, beautiful finished drawing you can be proud of.

      Let's Paint in Oils!

In this class all elements of painting will be fair game...design, drawing, shape, line, value, color, edges, texture and any other elements that we need to cover. We'll spend some time "just-plain-painting", but we'll also try some painting exercises that I'm hoping will stretch the boundaries of how we paint. Hopefully these will be fun excursions to places outside of our usual painting-comfort zone, fun and a little challenging both.

We’ll start with brief comments by the instructor and a short demo, but plan to spend most of the class time working on your own art. This class is open to all levels, though a little bit of painting experience is helpful. If you’re looking for a first-time-ever oil painting class then there are probably some better choices out there. This is an oil painting class, and while many issues are the same in any medium, the instructor will be better able to help you if you're working in oils.

I like to keep the atmosphere in my classes relaxed, friendly and supportive, and normally do not do group critiques at the end of the session. You'll be working on your own painting ideas so bring whatever you are excited about painting!

      SUPPLIES THAT INSTRUCTOR WILL BRING

Students will bring their own supplies. I may have some extras on hand if needed.

PLEASE NOTE: Students are required to bring a container for acrylic and/or oil paint waste and will need to take it home to dispose of properly. It CANNOT be poured down the drains at our new location. Students are also encouraged to wipe brushes clean.

      SUPPLIES TO BRING

      Please bring:

      - small sketch book: 8" x 10" or smaller

      - pencils of varying hardness. I use 2H, HB and 3B

      - Photo references or other ideas to work from. Bring several!!

      - 1 - 2 canvases. If in doubt bring small ones, like 8" x 10" or 11" x 14". But bring the size you like to work with.

      - Brushes of various sizes. I mostly work with Brights #2, #4 and #6, but I also use a #0 round for small details and an old filbert for getting rid of edges. And a #8 or larger to slather in washes in large shapes. But again if you've got favorites, bring them!

      - Oil Paints. Bring the colors you like to work with but not too many. If you're not sure, I think that a good limited palette is: Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Cadmium Red Light, Quinacridone Rose OR Permanent Alizarin, Cobalt Blue OR Ultramarine Blue, and a neutral such as Raw Umber or Burnt Umber.

      - An easel (tabletop or standing)

      - Paper towels or rags (I use Viva paper towels)

      - Odorless mineral spirits like Gamsol (NO TURPENTINE PLEASE) and a small container to use them in (I use something called "SILICOIL")

      - Palette (I use a 12" x 16" plastic palette box with a thick glass surface inside the box)

      - Palette knife or knives

Rodgers gets most of his supplies at Meininger's or Guiry's, but they're largely available online, too.

        About the Instructor

Light and depth are woven throughout Rodgers Naylor's oil paintings, and are always foremost in his mind as he paints. His landscapes reflect his love of exploring the world's natural and cultural wonders. Rodgers studied drawing at The Atelier in Minneapolis and painting at The Art Students League of Denver. The Atelier provided a rigorous approach to accurate drawing while at the Art Students League he learned a loose and painterly style of painting. These influences remain strong, and he enjoys sharing his wealth of knowledge with his students. Rodgers exhibits his work in galleries, juried shows, art festivals and other venues. He teaches both workshops and classes, including teaching for several years at the Park Hill Art Club.

Learn Life Drawing with a Live Model!

Learn the basics of life drawing by working from a live model in this intro to life drawing class! Best for intermediate students with a foundational understanding of basic drawing concepts, but absolutely no life drawing experience is necessary. In this 4 lesson class we will cover:

        - An introduction to observational drawing - understanding that drawing is seeing, how to avoid the pitfall of symbolizing, and gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between artist and subject matter.

        - Capturing the essence of the human figure in brief gestures using charcoals, pastels, or other loose material. Learn to draw in the moment using quick and simplified lines and shapes, focusing on the pose and line-of-action.

-Building the structure of the figure using intercross and geometric shapes to develop an understanding of proportion and form. Improve your understanding of anatomy while also learning a proportional drawing technique that can inform all styles of representational art!

        - Learn expressive mark making using mixed media - a combination of dry materials such as pastels and charcoal with wet media such as watercolors or ink wash to facilitate an understanding of form and value while also creating beautiful and dynamic images.

-NOTE: The price of the class includes the model cost.

        LEVEL

        Intermediate

        SUPPLIES TO BRING

        Essential supplies:

Pad of Sketch paper or Newsprint for Gesture drawing - preferred 11x14 or larger

A sheet or two of 22"x30" heavier paper for wet media - I prefer Rives BFK, Watercolor paper works as well - either Cold Press or Rough texture preferred. Can be white/tan/grey - student's preference. Can be torn/cut in half

Charcoal - Pencils and/or sticks, vine or compressed is fine - for bold markmaking and loosening up drawing techniques

Eraser - I prefer either natural gum erasers or soft white erasers

Either Watercolor paints or India Ink- a small watercolor pan set is easiest, but tubes or bottles work as well, whatever the student prefers

A watercolor brush - can be any brush suitable for watercolor, bamboo brushes work as well

Please feel free to bring any other materials the artist is comfortable using i.e. Graphite pencils/sticks, other forms of wet media, other surfaces to work on. The techniques we will be covering are universal to all forms of drawing, the essential materials are to ensure we have the minimum requirements for the expressive form of mixed-media drawing we will be learning. Please feel free to reach out to me directly if you have any questions on materials for the class.

        INSTRUCTOR WILL HAVE

Hard chalk pastels in light/off white colors for capturing highlights

        Plastic cups for water

Paint Realistic Still Lifes in Watercolor!

Learn how to make your watercolor still life paintings pop off the page! In this 3-week class, we’ll focus on how to build form using light, shadow, and color—so your apples look round, your mugs feel solid, and your compositions feel full of depth.

        You’ll explore how to:

        • See and paint simple shapes as three-dimensional forms
        • Use warm and cool colors to create the illusion of volume
        • Layer watercolor transparently to add depth
        • Control edges to make some areas soft and subtle, others crisp and focused

Each week includes short exercises and one guided painting project. You’ll leave class with at least one finished still life painting and the tools to keep going on your own.

All levels welcome, but some watercolor experience is helpful. This class is perfect for anyone looking to strengthen their painting foundations and bring more life to their still lifes.

Abstract Flowers & Botanicals in a Colorful Way!

If you would like to learn how to abstract flowers & botanicals in an expressive, colorful way, this class is for you. We will be focusing on creating unique shapes, fresh color and forms using a variety of mark-making techniques. Instead of trying to perfectly replicate the realistic appearance of flowers, we will emphasize the essence of botanicals through expressive brushstrokes, vibrant colors, good values and different shapes through abstraction. We will use reference pictures and/or real flowers and leaves as a jumping off point. In this class, you will also spend time exploring color as a way for you to gain confidence and create color harmony in your paintings. There will be plenty of hands on painting time, brief slideshows of cool artwork and demos too.

        Supplies Students BrinG

        • Photo references of assorted flowers and leaves, and/or books of flowers and  botanicals to work from. Bring several.

        • Paper towels

        • Water & Container (such as old plastic cups or large yogurt containers).  • Apron & Plastic Gloves

        • An easel (tabletop or standing)

        • Palette (Paper palettes that come in pads/sheets are fine or you can use some sort of  plastic palette such as Masterson Sta-Wet Palette which come in sets that includes the  sponge and paper palette in sealable container.

Gray Scale and Value Finder (Optional)

        • White Paper Roll (to be used for mark-making explorations). You may also use large  sheets that come in Pads size 18” x 24”. We will be using this initially used for mark making exploration so you don’t have to use anything expensive.

Note: If you want to use “archival safe papers” for the mark-making exercisesthat you eventually want to collage into your paintings, you may want to consider something like: Strathmore 400 Series Mixed Media rolls such as 18” x 20 ft or 18” x 24” pads). However this can be expensive and is not necessary at this point.

Sketch Pad Clip Board and metal clips or something solid like cardboard to tape  paper to. Make sure it’s large enough to fit your large paper.

        • Painters tape

        • 1-2 Canvas Panels or Boards (Larger sizes are best such as 16 x 20 or 20 x 24 or 24 x  30). Also, choose a painting surface that has a “hard” backing such as canvas panels  or boards that have been pre-gessoed. We will be doing several layers of mixed media  with all types of tools so you don’t want to poke a hole in a plain canvas surface).

        • Acrylic paints. Bring the colors you already have that includes: White, Black, Red,  Blue and Yellow. A suggested limited palette is: Titanium White (Bring larger tube of  white), Cadmium Yellow Light (or Lemon Yellow), Cadmium Red Light, Ultramarine  Blue, Cadmium Orange, Quinacridone Magenta (or Alizarin Crimson), Dioxazine Purple,  Phthalo Green, Phthalo Blue, Ivory Black.

Optional: I dont want you to go out and spend a lot of money on paints so bringwhat you already have. Additional colors that I use are: Emerald Green (or Bright AquaGreen), Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue, Light Blue Violet, Yellow Ochre, Light GreenPermanent, Cadmium Yellow Deep, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Naphthol Crimson (or red), Buff (or similar Unbleached Titanium), Fluorescent colors, Olive Green, and any favorite colors you already have.

        • Brushes of various sizes. Bring what you have. I use filberts such as #2, #4 #6, #10. • Paint Scrapers in various sizes. ( you can also use old credit cards or gift cards)

Mark-Making Tools such as markers, pencils, water soluble crayons, oil pastels, etc.  What ever you have to make marks with. Be creative.

          Woodcut Holiday Card Making!

Goal: for participants to produce an edition(s) of 5 or more holiday cards from their sketch or drawing.

Instruction: Participants will be introduced to what it takes to make a successful woodcut print holiday greeting card. They will look at wood and paper types, and their advantages and disadvantages for woodcut printmaking. We will also discuss carving tools, inks, brayers, and tools for making the impression on the paper.

NOTE: Safety is a top priority. Participants will use “bench hooks” to stabilize the block while gouging out white areas.

Razor-sharp Japanese carving tools are available for use, and soft, smooth-grained shina plywood is provided to carve the image in. The cost of ink, paper, the first woodblock, and supplies are covered in the fee.

Participants must bring a reference drawing, 6" x 8", or ideas for the holiday woodcut print to be produced.

Participants will transfer their drawing to the block, carve the image into the block, ink the block, and print it, using a hand burnisher.

There will be brief demos of steps of the process each class period, to familiarize participants with tried-and-true details of making handsome woodcut prints.

            About the Instructor

Michael Keyes is a woodcut printmaker and oil painter with a BFA from Wright State University, and an MFA from Ohio State University.

In woodcut printmaking, he is challenged by composing black and white shapes into active, impactful images. His woodcuts relay visual stories—either a simple story of a breathtaking landscape, or a complex story of people helping people, as in activities in early days of the Covid 19 pandemic. The addition of brisk color, produced with oil-based inks, brings a special liveliness to some of his works.

He has taught woodcut printmaking at Park Hill Art Club, when the club met at Park Hill United Methodist Church, before COVID.

He teaches woodcut printmaking at Art Students League of Denver.

He was awarded “Best of Show” at the 2021 National Arts Program Front Range Exhibition, and “First Place” in the Studio Work Category, at the Escalante Canyons Art Festival in 2024, among other recent awards.
