PAINTING YOUNG and OLD FACES in WATERCOLOR!

This fun class will take your portraits to a new level. The watercolor painting process for children and elderly adults is very different! Explore watercolor techniques for creating wrinkles of older people and the smooth skin of young children. Learn how to mix paints to create different skin and hair colors.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Pam McLaughlin is a Colorado watercolor painter, photographer and author.

Pam's paintings have been in numerous exhibitions including the International American Watercolor Society’s Exhibition in New York City and are featured in the Spring 2023 edition of the Art of Watercolor Magazine (49th Issue).

For the past 15 years, Pam has taught watercolor. She is presently on the faculty at the Art Students League of Denver and teaches at the Arvada Center for the Arts.

2026 Park Hill Art Club Holiday Arts and Crafts ShowSaturday, November 7, 2026

We are looking forward to featuring works from our many talented member artists at the 2026 Park Hill Art Club Holiday Arts and Crafts Show.

WHEN: Members can register for the show starting Saturday, September 14, 2026. Registration closes on Saturday, October 18th, or sooner if space has sold out.

ELIGIBILITY: All Park Hill Art Club Members. Click here to become a Park Hill Art Club member or to renew your membership.You must have an active PHAC membership to exhibit your work in the show.

SET-UP AND BREAKDOWN:

Set up is on Friday, November 6, from 4 to 6 pm and 8-10 am on Saturday November 7, in the church gymnasium.
Breakdown begins at 4 pm the day of the show. Artists may not break down early.
Artists are responsible for customer interactions, and must be present for the entire day. No arriving after opening, or leaving before closing.
8x8 booths with wall space-$35
Booth with panels in center of room (37" x 69" each panel) sold in multiples of 2-$35 for each pair.
Two artists can share a booth. To share a booth, register yourself as you normally would. Co-exhibitor no longer needs to be registered, but they must be an active member. It is the registered artist's responsibility to communicate all requirements and guidelines to a co-exhibitor.

As part of the registration process, we are asking every exhibitor to volunteer a little time to help support the show.

Distribute yard signs one week before the show (November 1^st) (~2 hours)
Distribute posters and flyers in local neighborhoods, beginning 3 weeks before the show (October 17^th) (~2 hours)
Contribute refreshments for day of show

We are pleased to offer exhibit space for Emerging Artists

Eligibility requirements

Must be a club member
Have never exhibited at a Park Hill Art Club show before
Work a two hour shift staffing emerging artist booth space
Encouraged to volunteer to support our show, as listed above

We encourage any artist who has not exhibited to sign up to contribute up to 3 pieces, no larger than 18x24 inches. There is no booth cost to you, and as with other artists, PHAC will take 20% commission, and is responsible for collecting taxes and paying credit card fees.

This is a great opportunity for you to be able to exhibit your work without having to commit to a booth, and is limited to the first 6 artists to register.

She has been working on needle felting for the last five years and has participated in several Artisan Markets selling her products.

Explore monoprinting with gelli plates in a hands-on, experimental class focused on process and discovery.

In this 3-week class, you will:

• Learn the basics of gelli plate printing, including how to roll paint, pull prints, and build layers using stencils, textures, and simple masking techniques.

• Practice color mixing and layering to understand how different colors interact on the plate and how they build over time on paper.

• Experiment with a variety of tools and materials to create different surface effects, patterns, and layers, and develop a collection of printed papers for future use.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Behnaz Ahmadian is a self-taught mixed media artist, instructor, and interior designer. She teaches a variety of classes for adults, sharing her passion for color, texture, layering, and collage. Her work focuses primarily on acrylic and mixed media collage, often incorporating hand-painted papers and inspired by nature, organic forms, and pattern. Growing up in a creative family and influenced by her mother, a fashion designer, Behnaz brings a strong sense of color and design into both her artwork and teaching. She encourages students to explore their creativity while developing their own artistic voice.

From Photo to Portrait: Gouache & Watercolor for Everyone

Discover the joy of painting portraits without the pressure of drawing! In this two-session workshop, students will explore the expressive possibilities of watercolor and gouache while learning how to create a portrait from a favorite photograph.

Using a simple contact paper transfer technique, we will transfer a photograph onto watercolor paper, allowing us to focus on what really matters: color, value, brushwork, and personal expression. Students will experiment with both transparent watercolor and opaque gouache, learning how these two versatile mediums can work together to create beautiful, expressive portraits.

No drawing experience necessary! This class is designed to build confidence, encourage experimentation, and help everyone create a portrait they are excited to take home.

SUPPLIES FOR STUDENTS TO BRING

1. Paints

Gouache (Designer NOT Acrylic)

At least the three primary colors: red, yellow, and blue.
White gouache (titanium white preferred).

Watercolor

- At least the three primary colors: red, yellow, and blue.

Yarka watercolor sets are a great value and an excellent way to get started.

2. Brushes

A good round watercolor brush

One size 8 or size 10 round brush.
Princeton watercolor brushes are my personal favorite.

A versatile round brush will handle most of the painting in this class but feel free to bring others you have.

3. Paper

Watercolor paper

140 lb or 300 lb watercolor paper only. You will need one good piece for your finished portrait and some for practice.
Arches and Strathmore are my preferred brands.

Please do not bring 90 lb paper. Heavier paper handles water and layering much better for this project.

4. Additional Supplies

A white or gray palette for mixing paint.
Pencil and eraser
Two water containers (one for rinsing brushes and one for clean water).
A few tissues and a rag for managing moisture and lifting paint.
A spray bottle for keeping paints moist.
Artist masking tape, preferably white or tan to match the paper.
Watercolor masking fluid (helpful, but not mandatory).

5. Your Portrait Reference

Please bring two color printouts of your subject.

Two identical 8.5 x 11-inch color printouts of the photograph you want to paint.
Choose a clear photograph with good lighting and visible facial features.
The face in the photograph should be at least the size of your fist on the printed page.

We will use one printout for transferring the image and the other as our painting reference.

Printing tip: Denver Public Library cardholders can print up to 100 free color pages per day, making it an easy and affordable option for preparing your reference images.

Bonnie Stolzmann is a distinguished fine artist and illustrator based in Denver, renowned for her dynamic and engaging approach to both art and education. Painting Children in Watercolor!

Painting children is different than painting adults! Learn the proper proportions of a child’s facial features. The anatomy of the eyes, nose and mouth will be emphasized. Multiple watercolor techniques and mixing strategies will be utilized. Pam will demonstrate each step of the painting process.
