Create Your Own Abstract Landscapes!


    Learn how to quickly paint abstract landscapes from photographs using acrylics and improve your existing painting skills with this flexible medium. Landscape painter Cliff Austin will guide students in how to recognize value and shape in painting colorful, expressive landscapes and cover how to paint from light to dark and how to apply and paint the background to the foreground. Students will practice shapes, value, and color as they paint landscapes from their own photo references.

    SUPPLIES TO BRING

    Paint:

    • Black, White (large tube), Cad Yellow Med, Cad Red Med, Cad Orange, Yellow Ochre, Ultramarine Blue, Sap
    • Green, Burnt Umber, Dioxazine Purple, as a basic set.

    Liquitex and Golden are the professional grade paints. Liquitex Basic is good for economy purchases.

    Brushes:

    • 1 inch Flat Acrylic Brush
    • ½ inch Flat Acrylic Brush
    • ¼ inch Flat Acrylic Brush
    • #6-Pointed Brush
    • #2-Pointed Brush
    • "0" Liner Brush

    Inexpensive 9x12 Canvas pads or canvas panels

    Brands include: Fredrix, Soho, Canson, Winsor Newton, Masters Touch (Hobby Lobby)

    Acrylic Palette:

    9x12 or 12x16 Gray Matters 50 sheet Paper Palette Pad

    Masterson Sta-Wet Palette Seal with gray matters paper palette places inside

    1 quart water container - PLEASE NOTE: Students are required to bring a container for acrylic paint waste and will need to take it home to dispose of properly. It CANNOT be poured down the drains at our new location. Students are also encouraged to wipe brushes clean.

    Viva paper towels and assorted dish rags

    Pencil and Eraser

    Bring your own photographs from vacations or holidays that you are inspired by.

      About the Instructor

      Cliff Austin is a graduate of Denver Institute of Technology and the Rocky Mountain School of Art. He lives and has his studio in Aurora Colorado. He has been painting and illustrating since 1980 when he graduated from Rocky Mountain School of Art. He has affiliations with many Colorado art organizations such as the Pastel Society of Colorado, the Plein Air Artists of Colorado, the Oil Painters of America and the American Impressionists Society. His work can be seen at Mary Williams Fine Art, in Boulder, Colorado. The core of Cliff’s art is the relationship of light on shape using line and tone and color as it wraps and flows around the landscape and cityscape and figures. Colorful, Impressionistic, and sometimes very abstract are used to describe his work. He is an award winning Colorado artist.
