Learning Gouache and Negative Painting with Bonnie Stolzmann

Get ready to try something new!

You'll learn:

  • How to use gouache to create a painting with both negative and positive spaces.
  • About the properties of gouache.
  • How to incorporate gouache into your water media paintings.
  • How to use negative painting for fun and different compositions. 

Supplies

Instructor will bring

  • Stencils
  • Graphite paper
  • Black Paper (for experimentation)
  • Some watercolor and gouache paints to borrow, if needed. 

Students will bring

(Please contact instructor if you need help paying for supplies.)

  • Paper: 1 sheet of 140 lb. watercolor paper; 9"x12" or larger for final painting.
  • 3 or more sheets of 90lb watercolor paper for practice.
  • Watercolors: Red, Yellow, and Blue (at a minimum)
  • Gouache: (Traditional, not acrylic) Titanium white and at least two primary colors. Recommended brands: M. Graham & Co. or Winsor & Newton Designer's Gouache.
  • Brushes: Watercolor 1" Flat and a #8 or #10 Round (at a minimum).
  • Drafting tape (optional)
  • Spritzer (small spray) bottle (optional)
  • Paper towels and tissues
  • Water container
  • Palette for paints

About the Instructor

Bonnie joined the Park Hill art club and immediately loved the classes and community. She teaches painting to all ages and loves making sure all of her students feel supported. With an extensive background in biological illustration and fine art painting she’s excited to help you expand your painting practice in a fun and caring environment.
