Making Acrylics Work for You - Lisa Riannson (Garrison)

Acrylic is the most versatile painting medium. It's wonderful for creating realistic paintings, mixed media, collage, and abstract. It can even imitate watercolor and oil paint! Join instructor Lisa Riannson to explore a wide range of acrylic techniques.

In this course you will paint:

  • A "watercolor" landscape on paper
  • A traditional still life on a canvas panel
  • An abstract on a hardboard panel

By doing these step-by-step paintings, you'll learn many different acrylics techniques allowing you to bring your own artistic vision to life.

Experience Level:

Beginner to Intermediate

Supplies to Bring

Surfaces:
  • 8" x 10" hardboard panel (gessoed or non-gessoed)
  • 8" x 10" canvas panel
  • Mixed media paper pad or watercolor paper (preferably 300 lb.)
Acrylic Paint
(Any brand as long as they are "heavy body," instructor prefers Golden brand)

Suggested colors:
(Note: you can use an introductory set which includes these colors or colors close to the ones listed)

  • Titanium White
  • Mars Black
  • Hansa Yellow Medium
  • Naphthol Red Light
  • Sap Green 
  • Ultramarine Blue

Optional Colors:

  • Yellow Ochre
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Translucent Iron Oxide
  • Quinacridone Magenta
Palette
  • Masterson Artist Palette Seal
  • Palette paper (instructor prefers Jack Richeson Grey Matters Palette Paper)
  • Paper towels (instructor recommends Scott blue shop towels)
Brushes

Recommendations:

  • 2" and 1" (can be from home improvement store or inexpensive set)
  • 16 round
  • 6 flat
  • Liner

Pencil and eraser

Water container

Instructor will provide:

Acrylic mediums, spray bottle, palette knife, sponge, artist tape, stencils, scrapers, collage paper, mixed media (colored pencils, oil pastels, paint pens), extra paper towels, white gesso, and high flow acrylic paint.

About the Instructor

Lisa Riannson (Garrison) is a water media artist whose work is devoted to strong contrast, bursts of color, and attention to fine details. Regardless whether she is working in watercolor or acrylic, she's focused on creating a dynamic composition by strategically placing value and color. 

She taught Portraits in Watercolor at the Park Hill Art Club in 2019. She has also taught at the Colorado Free University and her private studio. In Spring, 2020 she was a demonstrating artist at the Denver Art Museum. Her work has been shown at the Lone Tree Art Expo, Canon Gallery, SYNC Gallery, the CLIO Art Fair, and other local venues.
